What is WorkSpace Week?
WorkSpace Week runs from 19 to 25 October. It’s the Australian Chiropractors Association’s yearly reminder to look after your body at work, and this year’s theme is “Work Well from Head to Toe.”
When Stress Settles in Your Neck and Shoulders
Ever noticed your shoulders creeping up towards your ears on a busy day? Stress can be associated with muscle tension and may trigger or worsen tension-type headaches in some people. Headaches have different causes, though, and neck-related headaches need assessment rather than being assumed to come from stress.
Tension-Type Headaches
Headache Australia estimates that up to seven million Australians experience tension-type headaches. They often feel like a tight band wrapped around the head.
Cervicogenic (Neck-Related) Headaches
These headaches are associated with structures in the neck and can refer pain into the head, often alongside neck stiffness.
“Stress can be associated with tension in the neck and shoulders. Paying attention to how you feel, taking movement breaks, and seeking appropriate advice when symptoms persist is a great place to start.” – Dr Paul Harlond, D.C., Senior Chiropractor and Director
The Ripple Effect at Work
A sore head can make everyday tasks harder. Focus may slip, tasks may take longer, and catching up with colleagues (or even friends after work) can feel like too much.
Simple Ways to Ease the Load
- Take a mini-break from your desk every 30 minutes.
- Stretch gently when your neck or back feels tight.
- Hold your phone at eye level.
- Head outside at lunch for a lap of nearby College Park.
