A Harvard study had 75 people eat canned or fresh soup for five days without altering their regular eating habits. During this period they saw their urinary levels of the chemical Bisphenol A spike 1221 percent compared to those who ate fresh soup.

Previous studies at Harvard have found links at lower levels of BPA to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity in Humans according to Lead author Jenny Carwile.

BPA can be found in the of canned foods, cash register receipts, dental fillings, some plastics and polycarbonate bottles marked with the number 7.

“The rise in urinary BPA we observes after just one serving of soup was unexpected. It may be a concern among individuals who regularly consume foods from cans daily.” Senior author Karen Michels said.
